John Legend Brings Holiday Cheer to ‘Fallon’ With Special Medley Performance: Watch

John Legend stopped by The Tonight Show on Wednesday (Dec. 5) to spread holiday cheer with a medley featuring “What Christmas Means to Me” and “Bring Me Love” off his A Legendary Christmas album. He also sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to discuss his VR project and the making of his holiday release.

The 39-year-old opened by chatting about Crow: The Legend — a virtual reality short film in which he plays the leading character alongside celebrities including Oprah Winfrey and Constance Wu.

“You put on the headset and you’re like in our world,” Legend said. “But it’s all animated and you hear me singing and talking.”

Legend wrote a song for the project, which is based on a Native American myth. “It’s about sacrifice, it’s about community, and it’s about this character — the crow — who starts out as a rainbow colored crow, but he has to make this sacrifice for the animals and the rest of the forest,” said Legend, “And he comes back as the crow that we know them to be — the black crow — with the little hints of rainbow.”

Legend also discussed the making of his new holiday album: “Every Christmas, the season will come along and I’m like, ‘Why don’t I have a Christmas album out right now?’ But you can’t make it in December, you got to make it in April, May, June, July — and the label makes you release it in October, because the adult contemporary stations start playing it the day after Halloween.”

Legend additionally shared that the album marked the first time he and Stevie Wonder collaborated on the same record, despite playing at each other’s weddings, performing on stage as a pair and doing TV together in the past.

For his performance, Legend wore a green suit and was backed by a set washed in winter colors. On his right, a trio of backup singers and horn players bopped in time with the music.
